PUBLIC WORKS
The Engineering Division performs design and drafting for plans and prepares specifications for improvements to the City's infrastructure. The division maintains engineering and utility records, and inspects the City's bridges, seawalls, storm sewer , sanitary sewer, water, and street lighting systems. The survey function within the division provides surveys, legal descriptions, construction layouts, line and grade for water and sewer, streets, streetlights, and storm water improvements. The division also issues utility construction permits, reviews Planning and Zoning Board issues and also conducts building plans reviews.
The Construction/Financial Management Division manages public works infrastructure projects including water mains, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, bridges, seawalls, pumping stations, streetscapes, buildings and park facilities. Services provided include project planning, design review, fiscal and construction management, and warranty administration. This division also administers requirements for sidewalk cafes, newspaper racks, payphones, and bus shelters. Additionally, this division is responsible for compliance with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The Environmental Resources Management Division is responsible for ensuring comprehensive environmental compliance of the City of Miami Beach with all applicable state and federal regulations.
The newly created Transportation/Concurrency Management Division initiates, manages, coordinates, evaluates and facilitates all transportation, mobility, concurrency, and growth management efforts for the City. The Division is responsible for strengthening the linkages between the City's Land Use Transportation models involving mobility, livability, accessibility and sustainability issues. The Division is also responsible for the implementation of the Municipal Mobility Plan projects; and serves as the liason to the County Transit Agency for our local bus circulator service, the South Beach Local. In addition, the Division serves as the liaison between the City and the County/State officials and their projects and programs; and procures funding for the planning, design and construction of all transportation and related projects. In addition, the City and residents of Miami Beach have identified bicycle improvements and programs as part of their strategic plan and as a priority goal. The Miami Beach Bicycle Program aims to improve and enhance the bicycling environment of the City. It works to make bicycling a safe and viable transportation option. Choosing bicycling as an alternative form of transportation will increase the quality of life for our community by reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and supporting a sustainable city.
The Water and Sewer Divisions maintain water and sanitary sewer pumping stations; supplies potable water and collects waste water in the City and neighboring cities; cleans and maintains water storage tanks, water and sanitary sewer lines, appurtenances, and subaqueous crossings, fire hydrants, water service lines and meters and valves; performs reading and servicing of water meters. This division also manages the utility warehouse operation. The divisions are also responsible for the collection of water samples and compliance with EPA, HRS and DERM requirements.
The Storm Water Utility Division manages and controls the amount of effluents which are discharged into the City's storm water system. This division is responsible for maintaining storm water lines; installing catchment filter basins to reduce and eliminate polluted storm water run-off; complying with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit requirements; and relieving flooding conditions. The newly created Community Resource Management Division will ensure that all critical work and high profile community maintenance in South, Middle and North Beach is dealt with by a team of coordinators, supervisors and workers who will get the work done in an expedient and effective manner. The team will coordinate community outreach for capital projects.
