ARTIST JIM MORRISON
Title: Celebration of Lights, 1996
Medium: LED lights
Location: Miami Beach Gateway Entrance at the Julia Tuttle Causeway
When Jim Morrison did the project he felt that "Being a New England native, and having lived my entire adult life in South Florida, I feel that my work is reflective of very diverse influences. My work involves combining light and natural elements, whether it is wood, metal, stone or glass."
Originally installed for New Years lighting in 1997, the neon rings in the palm trees became an instant landmark for those traveling to Miami Beach. The multi colored work includes 52 palm trees, each fitted with a glowing ring of light, scattered over a 6 acre area. The combination of neon and palm trees, being synonymous with the vibrant energy of South Florida, has resulted in this now iconic installation.
On January first of 2007, its 10th year anniversary, and after weathering several hurricanes, the neon was upgraded to a color changing LED technology, allowing for unlimited color changes, and animation.
