Eligibility: International open call to all professional artists or artist teams. Applications from architects, landscape architects or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team.
The City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places, in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places, request qualifications from professional artists or artist teams to create monumental works of public art for the Miami Beach Convention Center Renovation and Expansion Project.
Owned by the City of Miami Beach (the City), the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC or Convention Center) is a significant economic generator for the City and the region. Originally built in 1957, the MBCC encompassed 108,000 square feet. In 1968, an additional 130,500 square feet of exhibit space was added, with additional support facilities subsequently constructed in 1974. In 1986, as the demand for exhibition space increased, the facility underwent a $92 million renovation and doubled in size to its current footprint of approximately 1.2 million square feet, including approximately 502,000 square feet of exhibition space and 126,000 square feet of meeting space.
The MBCC currently hosts approximately 145 events annually, including internationally recognized events such as Art Basel Miami Beach and the Miami International Boat Show. It also hosts rotating conventions, meetings, and a number of annual trade shows.
During 2016 to 2018, the City plans to renovate and expand the MBCC to “Class A” standards. In general, the Project is to include all exhibit halls, meeting rooms, pre-function, and support spaces such as loading docks, kitchens, bathrooms, MEP systems, and exterior areas. In addition, the MBCC is to be expanded to accommodate a new ballroom and meeting space. The Project will also include the conversion of approximately 880 surface parking spaces into a 5.8 acre public park and refurbishment of Convention Center Drive and the Collins Canal seawall. New parking replacing the existing spaces will be incorporated on the roof of the building.
The City has hired Fentress Architects as its Design Criteria Professional (“DCP”), to create a Design Criteria Package documenting the City’s intent of the renovation and expansion. The DCP’s team also includes local architect Arquitectonica and landscape architect West 8.
Opportunities for Public Art
The project team has identified four suggested opportunities for the integration of public art. The decision to implement opportunities will be based upon the artists’ site specific project proposals and the recommendations of the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places Professional Advisory Committee (PAC). Artists may be recommended for one or more opportunities. The estimated project budgets for these opportunities are intended to serve as preliminary financial parameters for conceptualizing project proposals and shall be inclusive of all artwork implementation costs including artist’s and consulting fees, travel, design, fabrication, and installation.
1) Monumental Exterior Work for Convention Center Park
Estimated Project Budget: $1.3 million
A signature work of public art is envisioned as the focal point of the Convention Center Park. Located on the western facing side of the Convention Center, the 5.8 acre open space park will feature shade trees, food pavilions, areas for relaxation and areas for markets, outdoor receptions, community events and temporary art installations.
2) West Concourse – North and South Junior Ballrooms Walls
Estimated Project Budget: $1 million
Two locations within the interior two story grand lobby on the West concourse of the Convention Center will have the opportunity for an intervention. It is envisioned that an artist will design an enhancement to the two Junior Ballroom walls which span from the first floor to the ceiling of the second floor either on the walls, or with a mobile which may hang into the open spaces. Both locations will be seen from the exterior.
3) Northeast Grand Ballroom Lobby Wall and Floor
Estimated Project Budget: $1.3 million
An artist intervention is conceived for the lobby area of the northeast ballroom. The commissioned artist may wish to integrate artwork as floor and wall or as a hanging mobile.
4) VIP Ballroom Exterior Wall and Entry
Estimated Project Budget $650,000
To create an artwork feature that enhances the users’ experience as they transition from the garage parking space to the adjoining ballroom area. Artists may wish to augment the interior façade walls with custom coverings, screen, video projections, etc. Art feature must include a security gate at the terrace.
In conceptualizing projects and choosing materials, it will be important for the artist to consider the permanence of all artwork, maintenance requirements and their relationship to such environmental conditions as South Florida’s harsh sunlight, rain, wind, and the location’s proximity to seawater. In addition, artists are encouraged to take into account the LEED standards being pursued for the overall project and ways in which proposed art projects can contribute to and incorporate green building and performance measures.
Estimated Project Schedule
The Miami Beach Convention Center will complete construction by December 2017.

Professional visual artists who demonstrate innovative, contemporary and creative approaches in addressing permanent, site specific works are encouraged to apply. The quality of the artist’s work and the strength of the artist's concept, design capabilities and established track record of museum/gallery exhibitions are the program's highest priorities. Artworks commissioned by the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places and Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places should add value to the public art collection, attract national attention, vitalize Miami Beach’s visual signature, celebrate the diversity and heritage of Miami Beach, strengthen economic development and tourism, heighten civic identity, and enrich the spirit and pride of our citizens.
City of Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County employees, as well as selection panelists and panelists’ immediate family members, are excluded from participation in this public art project.
ABOUT CITY OF MIAMI BEACH ART IN PUBLIC PLACES
Art in Public Places (AiPP) is a program of the City of Miami Beach Tourism, Culture and Economic Development Office for the purpose of commissioning or acquiring public artwork. The ordinance was created in 1984; however the ordinance was not established until 1995. The program is funded 1 ½ % of all hard costs of City projects: new construction, additions, and costs for construction of joint private/public projects. The AiPP Committee is composed of seven members appointed by the full City Commission who serve in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Commission. ABOUT MIAMI-DADE ART IN PUBLIC PLACES
Art in Public Places is a program of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs responsible for the commission and purchase of artworks by contemporary artists in all media. One of the first public art programs in the country, Miami-Dade Art in Public Places was established in 1973 with the passage of an ordinance allocating 1.5% of construction cost of new county buildings for the purchase or commission of artworks, educational programs and collection maintenance. The Art Trust Fund is administered by a County Commission-appointed citizens’ board, the Art in Public Places Trust, in consultation with its Professional Advisory Committee. The Selection Process
Appointed by the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places Board, the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) will be composed of professionals in the field of art, public art, architecture, art education, art history, or architectural history. A three-member group will be drawn from the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places Board to review all artists’ work responding to this Call and recommend finalists to develop site specific project proposals. The primary criteria for finalist selection will be previous artistic accomplishment as demonstrated in images of previously completed artwork, public art experience, and exhibition record in galleries and/or museums. The small number of finalists recommended by the PAC and approved by the Art in Public Places Board will be paid a $2,000 honorarium to develop specific proposals prior to final selection. The PAC will review finalists’ specific proposals and may recommend one or more of the proposals for commission(s). Each step of this process will include close consultation with City of Miami Beach representatives, the project management team and architects.
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK
Application Deadline Submissions must be received as a complete application in CaFÉ™ (www.callforentry.org) by no later than FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 2015, midnight.
1. Submission Process Submissions must be received as a complete application in CaFÉ™ by no later than Friday, January 16, 2015, Midnight EST. All materials will be submitted online, via CaFÉ™. There is NO application fee to apply or to use the CaFÉ™ online application system. To view the application, go to www.callforentry.org, register a username and password, navigate to “Apply to Calls,” and search for City of Miami Beach Convention Center Renovation and Expansion” All submissions must be received as a complete application in CaFÉ™. 2. Ten (10) images of previously completed work, this may include details. Please accurately identify medium, dimensions, date, location, client/agency, size, budget, completion date, and a brief written description. The CaFÉ™ system will prompt you to enter this information with each uploaded image. Only images of completed works will be reviewed. The PAC will not review images of unrealized proposal renderings. The submitted work samples should reflect artistic excellence, innovation and originality, as evidenced by professional quality of craftsmanship and mastery of skills, techniques utilized; professional approaches to processes and presentation, and/or communicate a unique vision or perspective.
NOTE: Artists who work in video, sound, installations and kinetic sculpture may submit a 3 minute video, audio or dynamic media file in lieu of still images to further describe their work. Artists must submit a complete the application and upload a video file representing the visual component of the work to the CAFÉ™ website. Maximum length is 3 minutes total.
3. Artist Statement Explain in no more than 5000 characters: the body of work, your philosophy, technique, or other information not apparent through the slides/images that may aid the PAC in more fully comprehending you as an artist or your work in general. This should be a summary of your artistic focus and professional career, especially as your background relates to your qualifications for this project. Please do not include a written proposal for this project.
4. A current professional resume The artist’s professional experience must meet the demands of the project. Qualifying activities would include some combination of the following: education and training as a professional artist, an exhibition record in museums, commercial art galleries, and/or non-profit art spaces, previous public or private commissions; participation in artist-in-residency programs, or other related activities indicative of a professional art practice. If you are applying as a team, please include your team/studio resume. If that is not available, please combine the individual resumes (one right after the other) of each team member into one document.
