New Curbside Recycling Program
The City of Miami Beach, along with Miami-Dade County, is implementing a new program called Single-Stream Recycling, in December. In this new program, already in use in many cities across the country, residents are able to place all containers and paper fibers mixed together in one single container, instead of being sorted into separate commodities (newspaper, cardboard, plastic, glass, etc.).
Once picked up by the collection truck, all recyclables are taken to a sophisticated recycling facility, called MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) where they are then sorted. In single stream, both the collection and processing systems must be designed to handle this fully commingled mixture of recyclables. The program is presently being provided for single-family residences and multi-family buildings of eight units or less that are on city garbage collection service. The new bins will be delivered to homes with instructions.
Recycling pick-up day for Miami Beach homes is every Wednesday. For more information on the program and how to recycle, go to http://www.miamidade.gov/dswm/new_curbside_recycling.asp or call 3-1-1.
