- Member of the Neighborhoods/Community Affairs Committee
Born and raised on Miami Beach, Tobin attended the Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy, North Beach Elementary, Ransom Everglades and Miami Beach High School. He went on to earn a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Florida and a Jurist Doctorate from the University of Miami School of Law. Continuing his commitment to law and order, Tobin became a prosecutor who rapidly distinguished himself for being tough on crime at the Broward County State Attorney’s Office. During his tenure as a supervising prosecutor, Tobin’s team prosecuted thousands of major felonies. The Florida Supreme Court reported, and the Orlando Sentinel lauded Tobin and his fellow prosecutors in the State Attorney’s office for a rare and enviable conviction rate of 90 percent. This astonishing success rate positioned the Broward County State Attorney’s Office as the Number One ranked team in the State of Florida.
Despite his arduous work in the Law, Tobin has been committed to serving our community in many ways. He has served as a volunteer with the Miami Beach Police Department. Tobin gave his time to former Mayor Seymour Gelber’s transition team at a time when Miami Beach was evolving and growing rapidly. The commissioner’s concern for children and families in need inspired him to serve as a board member for the Children’s Cancer Caring Center; a volunteer counselor for Camp Fiesta, a summer camp for children with cancer; a volunteer for the esteemed Habitat for Humanity; and as a volunteer at a Kids in Distress shelter.
